The Welsh Xtrem delivers £4K boost for Ark

A major Welsh event has given a £4,000 fundraising boost to Ark Cancer Centre Charity after the organisers and competitors were inspired to support the charity by a cancer survivor.

Nick Anderson has been a regular entrant to The Welsh Xtrem – a three-day multi-discipline 4x4 challenge event that tests the driver and co-driver to their limit and ability.

Last year, father-of-three Nick, from Sherborne St John, faced a life-changing battle with tongue cancer – one that he has thankfully survived.

Close friends were on hand to help and support Nick and his family during his gruelling treatment to beat the disease – and it was Nick’s ordeal that largely inspired his friend Rob Jones, managing director of Basingstoke-based strategic brand consultancy theEscape, to take part in last July’s Ark to Arc cycling event that raised more than £70,000 for Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

Being made aware of Ark’s mission to raise £5million towards a much-needed Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust cancer treatment centre in the Basingstoke area inspired Nick to nominate the charity as a beneficiary of The Welsh Xtrem 2018.

This year, 32 teams took part in the competition over the weekend of March 9-11 in The Pit at Cynheidre, Lanelli – and now £4,000 has been donated to Ark from the charitable proceeds raised at the event.

Nick said: “I have been involved in The Welsh Xtrem for a few years, and I spoke to Jason ‘Nobby’ Morgan – who is the driving force behind it – about Ark being one of the charities that would benefit from funds raised at the 2018 event.

“He was delighted to take Ark on board, and it is great that this significant sum has now been raised for the charity.”

Nobby said: “Nick is a Welsh Xtrem legend, so supporting his charity of choice as one of this year’s good causes was a no-brainer for all of us. We are so pleased that he has won his personal battle with cancer, and he has still got his cheeky charm and larger-than-life personality.”

Ark Cancer Centre Charity trustee Merv Rees said: “I am grateful to Nick, Nobby and all involved The Welsh Xtrem 2018 for their kind and generous support. The significant donation to the charity is much appreciated.”
