Generous donors deliver pub quiz boost for Ark

FABULOUS Ark supporter Natasha Watts, world record quiz king Richard Curtis, and generous quiz fans proved to be a dream team for Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

Over five nights, a superb total of £1,665 was donated to Ark by quiz contestants who logged on for Richard's popular online pub quiz.

Father-of-three Richard, landlord of The Portsmouth Arms, in Hatch Warren, Basingstoke, has been hosting a quiz online virtually every day since the COVID-19 lockdown started, entertaining more than 300,000 people who have taken part, and raising more than £40,000 for local charities.

Richard set a new record for the world’s longest-ever quiz over the weekend of May 9-10 – clocking up more than 34 hours as quizmaster.

From June 3-June 7, Ark was proud and honoured to be the quiz charity of the week – and Ark supporters joined regular quiz fans by joining in the free 50-question quizzes held live on Facebook. If they wished to, contestants were able to make an online donation to the charity.

The highlight of Ark’s charity week happened on Saturday, June 6 when Basingstoke singer-songwriter and fabulous Ark supporter Natasha popped into The Portsmouth Arms to perform a socially-distanced concert from 6.30pm-7.30pm ahead of that night’s quiz.

As lockdown eases, Richard's quizzes have now moved to a weekly slot on Sunday night. During lockdown, he is delighted to have been able to help people to stay in and stay together, as well as raising a lot of money for local good causes.

Mark Jones, Ark's director of fundraising and communications, said: "Thank you so much to Natasha, Richard and everyone who generously donated and supported Ark during the pub quiz nights.

"It was great to interact with those taking part in the quiz and to see how much people enjoy being part of this very special quizzing community that Richard has created during lockdown.

“Like every charity, Ark’s fundraising has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 crisis as we had to cancel Ark Day 2020, which was set to be our biggest fundraising campaign of the year. The fact that we received such generous support from wonderful Ark supporters and the quiz contestants, some of whom have been taking part for three months, is really heartening and means such a lot."
